The Unseen

the end.jpg

Recently, I read this wonderful excerpt from "A Raft Around the Corner and Other Stories to Keep You Going" by David Pippenger.

The story is called "The Life Raft We Cannot See" and it resonated with me when I think about the Illusion of Certainity. See for yourself:

The Life Raft We Cannot See
By David Pippenger

This is a true story...

Albeit, the short version.

A man found himself floating down the rapids in a river at the bottom of a canyon, miles from anywhere, in the middle of a wilderness area with his ankle broken in half.

Having been trained on how to get out of the rapids, he determined that he would get to the shore, and he did.

Not having been trained in what to do with a broken ankle in the bottom of a canyon...he determined that he would walk out of the canyon and up the steep, rocky path just as he had come down.

He did not.

You see, his ankle had the deciding vote, and it had decided that walking up a rocky slope was not in its best interest.

So, in an effort to appease the broken ankle, the man tried to walk using a crutch made from a tree.

Which was a brilliant idea...

If he had been walking on a smooth sidewalk going downhill for a short distance.

But he wasn’t.

He was next to a river at the bottom of a canyon, miles from anywhere, in the middle of a wilderness area with his ankle broken in half.

So he decided to think of every possible solution and to choose the best one.

From helicopters to climbing teams, he imagined every possible means to get out of the canyon that was miles from anywhere, in the middle of a wilderness area—with his ankle broken in half.

But while he was thinking, a raft came around the corner.

Which was interesting, because even though he had tried to think of every possible solution he had never thought of a raft.

But that wasn’t all.

Because in the raft was a Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician.

Which was particularly interesting, because the man with the broken ankle didn’t know there was such a thing as a Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician and he certainly didn’t expect one to be on a raft that he hadn’t even thought of.

Well, the Wilderness EMT made a splint with duct tape and branches from a tree and put the man in his raft, and later that night they camped at a beautiful spot on the river and ate chicken fajitas and strawberry shortcake.

Which was interesting, because the man with the broken ankle thought that he would be eating the dehydrated eggs that he had in his backpack.

Then he realized that a lot of things he hadn’t thought of and a lot of things that he had thought of had turned out in ways that he never thought out.

Which is why I am telling you this story.

I was the man with the broken ankle.

And that day next to the river at the bottom of a canyon, miles from anywhere in the middle of a wilderness area with my ankle broken in half...

I learned that I could not possible imagine all of the amazing things that were in store for me in my life.

Proust says that we shouldn’t look for new vistas, but instead look with fresh eyes.

He’s right.

No matter what life is throwing at us, there us a raft around the corner that we cannot see.

Don’t look for it; it cannot be seen.

Don’t predict when it will appear; it’s not on your timetable.

Don’t doubt that it exists, for doubts will cloud your eyes and cause you to give up before it arrives.

Don’t give up; give in.

Give in to the idea that positive events are in your future, even if you can’t see them.

Give in to the idea that positive events are in your future, even if you can’t imagine what they could possibly be.

There’s a raft around the corner.

~

Could you use a little faith in the life rafts coming your way?

Perception of Safety

Deadtreesunset"And the trouble is, if you don’t risk anything, you risk even more."

Erica Jong

The Illusion of Control is all about our attempts and constant striving to re-arrange the world to fit our view of how things should be.

Should is one of the most dangerous perceptions we can have.  When we perceive things to be a certain way, and don't allow other possibilities or considerations, we often end up disappointed, frustrated, and in struggle.

It's like the person "stuck" in their miserable job - yearning to make the break and start their own business, but they never do.  Why?  Because the perception of safety is that a paycheck is guaranteed.

When you were born, life didn't come with a money back guarantee.
Deep down, we all know nothing is certain.

Except what exists inside us.

Our Greatness.

In reality, we see time and again that our perception for safety can keep us playing and thinking small.  Ultimately, it keeps us from doing what we can do.

And before we know it, that dream has died along with a big part of ourselves, in the satin lined coffin that we have decorated with our assumptions, beliefs, and insecurities.

Is your perception of safety holding you back?

Abundance Intelligence® in the Big Apple

Cvchapternewyork_1This week I had the great pleasure of speaking at the New York City Midtown Coaching Center.  The title of my talk -- Coaching Into Greatness:  Introducing Your Clients to Abundance Intelligence.

The President, Craig Jennings, and the members of the Coaching Center were a wonderful, inspiring audience.  We talked about the concept of potential as a hidden form of scarcity, explored the 7 Illusions, and delved into how coaches bring out the Greatness in their clients.

Here are some of the comments from participants:

"As a result of Kim's presentation, the 'DNA of Greatness' is now a permanent mindset for me!"

"Inspirational!"

"Your presentation was excellent!  The whole idea of Abundance Intelligence® is so very encouraging -- recognizing the greatness (perfection/beauty) in each person is the essence.  Exciting!"

A big thank you to everyone who came out to hear me speak! If you have the chance to attend one of the Center's monthly meetings, I encourage you to do so.  The triad coaching after my presentation was thought-provoking and challenging!

"Doing More"

Blur_of_life_1A recent news article from Reuters caught my attention.  Titled, "Americans work more, seem to accomplish less", the article laid out Amerca's increasing ineffectiveness and exhaustion in the workplace.

It seems we have a love affair with Doing and the addiction is technology.

The article points to research conducted for Day-Timers Inc, a maker of organizational products.  The study found that 60 percent of workers say they always or frequently feel rushed, but those who feel extremely or very productive dropped to 50 percent from 83 percent in 1994.

Email, voice mail, cell phones, instant messaging.  You know them all.

"We think we're faster, smarter, better with all this technology at our side and in the end, we still feel rushed and our feeling of productivity is down," said Maria Woytek, marketing communications manager for Day-Timers.

It makes you wonder who's leading who, like the dog chasing his tail.

Email seems to be one of the biggest External Drivers out there.  I struggle with this in my own life.  I get about 400-500 emails a day and despite spam filters, about 35% is still unsolicited email.

Instead of setting boundaries around these External Drivers, many of us try to work harder, faster, smarter.  We tell ourselves we can DO MORE.

And we end up being less.

Are you chasing the tail of "Doing More"?

Clinging to Guarantees

Bridgetounknown"People have a hard time letting go of their suffering.  Out of a fear of the unknown, they prefer suffering that is familiar."

Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddhist monk and poet

Change is inevitable, yet we cling to the "safety" of our knowing, our satin lined coffin of familiarity.  Even if it's difficult, unfulfilling, or stifling, we cling.

We are in love with our clinging.

The Illusion of Certainty goes to the heart of this dilemma.  It's really a matter of trust -- not only trusting that good things come our way, but that we are capable of attracting and thriving with the good things.

In my book, Coaching Into Greatness, I say that life doesn't come with a money back guarantee.  Instead, we are to navigate with curiosity, openness, and vulnerability.  A tall order indeed!  This quotation was sent to me by one of my group coaching participants.  She is wildy, valiantly exploring the growing edge of her life, and letting go of the Illusion of Certainty bit by bit.

What guarantee are you still waiting for?
