#2 Bestselling Leadership Book

Celebration is in order!

This week's Amazon campaign that I conducted for Coaching Into Greatness was a big success!

With the support of more than 50 strategic partners, the book

hit #2 in Leadership (couldn't seem to squeak by Jim Collins' "Good To Great')

#10 in Business

#81 Overall

and managed to keep the rank of #83 all week!

Pretty amazing when you realize that CIG is 2-3 times the investment of nearly every book on the Amazon bestseller list!

Above and beyond all that, doing this Amazon campaign is a testament to the power of Social Capital. I am still deeply touched and overwhelmed when I think of all the amazing support I received from so many wonderful people and organizations.

Yes, having a bestselling book is a cool thing.

But what's really something is having the cailber of friends that support and love me.

They've stood by me. They've been a witness to me living into my greatness.

And that's priceless.

CIG Sighting

Bni_successnetI'm thrilled to let you know that my upcoming book, Coaching Into Greatness: 4 Steps to Success in Business and Life, is mentioned in this month's edition of BNI's SuccessNet newsletter.

In the article, I share how I've used writing articles to embrace the benefits of Dr. Misner's VCP process (Visibility/Credibility/Profitability).

In addition, the name of this blog will also be changing to reflect the direction Living Into Greatness has moved in.

We're planning for Friday.  Of course, I'll let you know for sure.

Check back this week to find out what the new blog design and title of the blog will be, and then let me know what you think!

Do you Squidoo?

Logosquidoo3_1Ok, I'll admit it.  I have a new addiction.  Warning, after reading this you may become addicted too!

Have you heard of Seth Godin's new initiative?  It's called Squidoo.  That's right, Squidoo. No typos here.

Squidoo is a free service that allows you to become a Lensmaster.  What do Lensmasters do?  They create Lenses, silly.

But what's a Lens, you ask?

I describe a Lens as a cross between a webpage and a blog.  Essentially it's your view into the world on whatever topic you choose.  When you create a Lens, you are able to display your expertise and interest in an area.  You can add links to your favorite sites, put up text, add pictures, RSS feeds, and lots more.  You can use a Lens to promote a product or service, talk about yourself, share a hobby, or celebrate something you love.

There are already 1,000's of Lenses.  I've created a bunch myself.

Confessions of a Delinquent Blogger

MedOk, so you haven't heard from me in about a week.  I've had a good excuse, really!  In the past two weeks, I've been out in California, hung out in a primeval forest, attended 3 conferences, given 3 presentations, and oh yeah, by the way, mailed off my manuscript for my first book.  Whew!  I get even more tired just thinking about all that work.

But it really hasn't been work. Okay, maybe spending 3 hours finishing up the 7 page glossary for the book was work, but the rest . . . well, it was pure pleasure.  I thought I'd bring you up to speed on the last couple of weeks:

On the 8th, I headed to California for the ICF (International Coach Federation) conference.  I was really looking forward to connecting with all my coaching buddies.  Here are some of the great people I caught up with:

  • Carol Zimmerman from Multiple Hats Mastery (Carol also does Human Design)
  • Garry Schleifer from Choice Magazine (and so much more!)
  • Stephen Fairley (he's got it goin' on!)
  • Kimberly Fulcher (Kim just published her first book "Remodel Your Reality")
  • Donna Steinhorn (Donna is a coaching dynamo)
  • Ruth Ann Harnisch (leader of the Coach 100 Free program)
  • Andy Wibbels (Andy has a book on blogging coming out in April)
  • Stever Robbins (need some traction for your business?)
  • Shari Horne (she's doing the redesign of my website and blog)
  • and so many more!

My friend, Kimberly Fulcher, threw an amazing shindig that Friday night at her house.  Not only is she the hostess with the mostess, that woman is a force of nature!  She can work a room, and she does it with beauty, grace, and sincerity.

I also got a chance to hang out with my editor, David, from Wiley at their booth at ICF.  That's when David told me the book is coming out a month earlier than originally scheduled - in April!  We discussed book cover designs, followup book plans, and Oprah.  David has a great vision, and he believes in my work.  I'm lucky to have him on my team.

On Saturday the 12th, I flew from San Jose to L.A. for the BNI and Referral Institute conferences.  I attended the BNI gala Saturday night with all the BNI directors worldwide and it was fabulous.  Got to hang out with my good buddies Mike Garrison (VP of Referral Institute) and Eddie Esposito (Dir. of Training and Dev. for Referral Institute).  Said hello to Dr. Ivan Misner, founder and CEO of BNI.  You'll be hearing lots more about The Referral Institute in the next year.

On Sunday I attended The Referral Institute conference.  They are experiencing tremendous growth!  In the afternoon, I spoke on Directive coaching, which is a hybrid of coaching, consulting, and training.  I also gave a sneak peek of the concepts in my new book and the room was buzzing with pre-orders and requests to hear more.  Everywhere I go, people are intrigued by abundance, scarcity and greatness.

I also spent an amazing day at Muir Woods and I'll share that in another post.

Great to be back!

The Next Phase of LIG

Introducing Abundance Intelligence

As the last chapter for the book is being written, it is amazing to look back over the past year and see what has transpired.  This book started out with little more than a list of the Illusions, the belief that we are all born great, and a passionate desire to get published.

GlassThe concept of Living Into Greatness emerged along with my 4 step process for coaching people.  Then my unique definitions of scarcity and abundance were born.  (The ultimate form of scarcity is resisting who you are and the ultimate form of abundance is exercising the freedom to be who you are.)  As I had more and more r&d calls, sharing the Illusions, the idea of conditioned patterns came to me.  Could we actually begin to measure the existence of abundance and scarcity in tangible ways?

The conditioned patterns led to the Abundance Aptitudes - the competencies of a person living who they are.  And then it struck me - what I was actually doing, (quite unknowingly at the time!) was creating a system, a pattern language for Abundance.  For the first time, someone was giving language and tangibility to ambiguious existing for over a century.

That's when the lightbulb went off.  I felt like I had been shot through a cannon!  The bigger vision of this work had been born.  Living Into Greatness is a powerful concept, AND it is only part of the picture.  The bigger idea, the idea of greatest impact and lasting change, is Abundance Intelligence® - Abundance Intelligence.  This is my true gift to the world.

And so Abundance Intelligence® is the next level of exploration, the next book, the next training program, the next community, the next everything.

Will you join me?

One More To Go!

JournalThe week ahead is going to be an exciting one!  After more than 5 months writing my book "Coaching Into Greatness:  4 Steps to Success in Business and Life", I've got just one more chapter to write!

Here's how the chapters have shaped up:

  • A New Way of Being (an introduction to my definitions of abundance and scarcity)
  • Why Greatness?  (making the case for why we should care about living into our greatness)
  • Forgetting Who You Are (an explanation of how the cycle of conditioning keeps us from being who we are)
  • Remembering Who You Are (introducing the 4 step LIG process)
  • The Illusion of Not Enough
  • The Illusion of Comparisons
  • The Illusion of Struggle
  • The Illusion of Time
  • The Illusion of Hope
  • The Illusion of Control
  • The Illusion of Certainty
  • Creating Abundance Intelligence (an introduction to the concept of Abundance Intelligence® and a sneak peek at the next phase of this work)

Each of the chapters features interviews from some of the great Abundant minds of our times.  Check the blog frequently for lots of previews and updates!

My Personal Not Enough

In this past week's class, we delved more deeply into measuring the patterns that make up the Illusion of Time.  This whole measurement process has been a bit squishy, to say the least!

How do you measure intangible qualities like abundance and scarcity?  It's easy to quantify the number of products sold, or pounds lost, or revenues generated.  But measuring Attachment and Convenient Distraction?  Not so easy.

In fact, nearing completion of my book and entering the next phase of this Living Into Greatness work, I found myself getting overwhelmed by the opportunities coming to me and the sheer BIGNESS of this work, Abundance Intelligence® , that is unfolding.

Frankly, the Illusion of Certainty and Not Enough have been kicking my ass.

Who am I to think I can create this thing called Abundance Intelligence?  I don't have the time, I don't have the background, I don't have the experience . . .

On and on it went.  For about a day and a half.

Then I remembered the words from my own book.

MeI CAN do what I can do.

I already have everything I need.

Being who I am is perfectly enough.

And I took a deep breath.

This stuff works.  How funny (and how perfect) that I have to be reminded by my own book . . .

That it's great.  And that it will be all that it can be.

As long as I am being who I am.

Profiles in Greatness

This week I had the honor of interviewing Julia Butterfly Hill for my upcoming book, "Coaching Into Greatness:  4 Steps to Success in Business and Life", due out in the Spring 2006.

Kumar03jbheadshot1 Julia Butterfly Hill

Rolling Stone Magazine has called her "the new face of environmentalism".  The author of two books including "The Legacy of Luna", Julia first made headlines when she conducted a treesit for over 2 years to protest the cutting down of old growth forests.  Her story will be documented in an upcoming major motion picture.

Julia spent nearly an hour talking with me about the Illusion of Not Enough, and her definitions of abundance, scarcity and authenticity.  Amazing.

Stay tuned for excerpts from this interview and many others showcased in the book.

Looking for Your Stories

As the writing for this book kicks into high gear, I'm reaching out to all of you.  I'm looking for examples and scenarios of the 7 illusions showing up in life and business environments.  Here's a refresher of the 7:

  1. Illusion of Not Enough
  2. Illusion of Comparisons
  3. Illusion of Struggle
  4. Illusion of Control
  5. Illusion of Time
  6. Illusion of Hope
  7. Illusion of Certainty

I'd like to know:

  • Do you see yourself in any of the Illusions?
  • Can you think of specific times in your life when you struggled with an Illusion?
  • Have you seen the Illusions at play with someone you know?
  • Have you worked with a client or an employee who's struggled with one of the Illusions?

I want to hear from you.  Here's what I'm looking for:

  • which Illusion you're targeting
  • a description of the scenario -- how the Illusion played out
  • what was the result (the result could also be that there was no result -- the person stayed stuck)

If you're not sure of the particular Illusion, or it overlaps with more than one, just make a note in your submission.  All submissions will be considered and anonymity will be protected.  You will be notified if I decide to use your story.

Everyone who submits an Illusion story will receive an exclusive sneak peek at the first chapter in the book!

Please email your submissions here with "Illusion story" in the subject line.

A big thanks to everyone for participating!

Lots of R&D!

Are you game?

As I launch head first into writing this book, I'm cranking up the r&d.  Stay tuned in the next couple of weeks for an exciting schedule of calls and discussions.  Here are some of the topics we'll be exploring:

  • patterns of conditioning
  • the language of scarcity
  • the languague of abundance
  • the opportunity cost of scarcity mentality
  • the core conditioning patterns for each illusion
  • applying the 4 step Living Into Greatness action process to the illusions and . . .

I'll also be sharing with you a brand new name (!) for the book and the clarity I've gained around the material.

Wanna' be part of the innovation?  Send an email to Elizabeth with "sign me up" in the subject line.  She'll add you to the list.  I'll also be posting updates and notices here at the blog.
